Ghostface Original Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Series with Scream 7.

The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a major family reunion. This new chapter signals the legendary return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters returning to the fray.

"Returning to a role you portrayed in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a challenge that kept me up at night," the actor admits.

An Unexpected Comeback for Fallon Characters

Reports have confirmed that a trio of different characters from earlier films are set to return in this latest sequel, even though dying in previous installments. The exact mechanism of their resurrection is still unclear. Audiences should prepare for the return of the endearing and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the director and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.

The Weight of Legendary Status

For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first occasion since a brief appearance is a long-held wish, even if he is terrified about the audience response. The performer vividly recalls the exact moment he received the news from the series creator.

"I recall the conversation. I remember the small talk. I recall him posing the question. That instance is permanently etched on my psyche," he states. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm really excited to be back."

Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the decades since the 1996 movie was released, which left Lillard feeling quite nervous.

"Truthfully, that's a part that lives in infamy, like it or not," he notes. "A character that is now embodied in each and every Ghostface mask that walks around every October 31st."

The Fear of Disappointing the Fandom

Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is in the same position as everyone else to see the finished film. He admits to feeling immense pressure about hoping not to be the one who damages the popular franchise.

"It's either a hit and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "At the start, I have no idea if the film will gonna work. I am unsure if people want to see me. I've certainly seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the franchise. I don't want people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"

Speculation and Excitement Run High

While many longtime fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's reappearance, the big question of how he and the others come back remains. Perhaps they live as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, like a previous plot device. Or, maybe they are in some way still living in a strange shared situation. The possibility of a meta-horror story, inspired by earlier genre films, also exists.

Moviegoers will discover the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
