New research indicates that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such drugs should be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to original weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the way of the jabs explains the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.
"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," described one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
