We are analyzing video footage and photographs shared this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia state killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to verify the location of where the images were from relied on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.
Locating other structures, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
